My annual gas safety check is due next month and I'm wondering whether I can do it myself with a gas sniffer and manometer, or if I should just pay a Gas Safe registered engineer. I'm pretty handy - done plumbing and basic electrics before - but gas is obviously a different ball game. What do people here do?

Gas Safe engineer. Every single time. No exceptions. Look, I'm all for DIY - I've rewired half my van and rebuilt the decking myself. But gas is the one thing I won't touch. If you get it wrong, best case is a gas leak. Worst case is... well, you know. Also, your site almost certainly requires a Gas Safe certificate from a registered engineer. Your insurance will too. DIY check won't cut it for either of those. Just pay the £60-80 and sleep easy.

Agreed with Dan. Gas = pro only. It's not about whether you're capable - it's about liability and safety. If anything ever happened, your insurance would void the claim immediately if there wasn't a valid Gas Safe certificate. Not worth the risk for the sake of £70 once a year.
